5-Minute Mental Health Reset for Busy Moms

As moms, we’re usually last on our own to-do list.. if we make the list at all! Between keeping tiny humans alive, managing the house, juggling work, and remembering to feed the dog (again), it’s no wonder our mental health often takes a back seat.

But I’ve learned something over time (usually the hard way): taking care of yourself doesn’t have to take hours. Sometimes, five minutes is all it takes to hit the reset button on a rough day.

So here’s my go-to 5-minute mental health reset. Something I do in between the chaos when I’m starting to unravel. These little moments have helped me feel more grounded, and honestly, more human.

1. Take 3 Deep Breaths

I know, it sounds too simple. But pausing to actually breathe makes a big difference. Try this: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4. Do this three times. That tension in your jaw? Your shoulders? It eases up. It’s like giving your nervous system a hug.

2. Stretch for 2 Minutes

Sometimes I literally raise my arms to the sky and sigh like a dramatic movie character. Other times, I just roll my neck while waiting for the microwave. Stretching helps me feel like I’ve taken back ownership of my body even for a moment.

3. Gratitude Check

Name three things you’re grateful for. Out loud or in your head. It all counts. I do this while walking to the mailbox or sipping my coffee in the morning. Some days it’s deep stuff; other days, it’s “I’m grateful I didn’t burn the rice.” That still counts.

4. Unplug for 1 Minute

This one’s surprisingly hard. One full minute with no screen, no podcast, no talking, just quiet. I close my eyes, breathe, and let my brain take a breather. It’s short, but powerful.

5. Quick Affirmation

Try this: “I am enough.” Say it out loud if you can. Another favorite of mine is “Present over perfect.” I whisper that one to myself on the extra messy days. You can use these or come up with your own. The important thing is that your mind hears kindness from you.

You don’t need a spa day to protect your peace. You just need a few intentional moments. A 5-minute reset won’t fix everything, but it can help you keep going with a little more grace (and fewer meltdowns: yours or theirs 😉).

You are not behind. You are not failing. You’re a mom and you’re doing more than enough.
